DC Police Union Backs Trump’s Crime-Fighting Efforts
The DC Police Union announced its support for President Donald Trump’s initiatives aimed at addressing crime in Washington, DC. In a statement, they recognized the president’s decision to consider temporary oversight of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) as a response to increasing crime rates.
Union Chairman Greg Pemberton expressed concerns about the current crime situation, stating that it has become “out of control” and that officers are feeling overwhelmed. “The capital cannot continue on this trajectory,” he noted.
“We are standing with the president,” Pemberton reiterated, labeling Trump’s actions as a necessary measure to stop the rising crime. However, he also emphasized the importance of reforming staffing and support within the department, suggesting that current policies have hindered effective recruitment and driven away experienced personnel.
On Monday, Trump signed an executive order to deploy the National Guard in an effort to combat violent crime in the capital, declaring a crime emergency in the area. In a related note, he suggested that the district’s homeless community be relocated “far from the capital.”
This push for a crackdown comes in light of several violent incidents, including the murder of two staff members from the Israeli embassy in May, the fatal shooting of a Congressional intern in July, and the assault of a young employee in August.
