Death at the Disney Castle in Germany and 5 other tourist-spot tragedies that shook the world

The recent murder of a 21-year-old American tourist at Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, adds to the list of similar horrific tourist tragedies.

Eva Liu, from the United States, was visiting Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau, Germany, with her friend Kelsey Chan, 22, who is also a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Both were sexually assaulted by a 30-year-old man who eventually pushed them off a bridge near the castle, a ravine near Marienbrücke.

Twenty-one-year-old Liu fell to his death, but his friend Zhang survived after falling into a ravine and breaking a tree.

The Disney Castle incident comes just days after the Skywalk incident in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA, and joins a long list of unfortunate accidents at popular tourist destinations.

1. Death on the Skywalk

The Mojave County Sheriff’s Office recently shared the news via a post on its official Facebook account that a 33-year-old man had died after falling over the edge of the Grand Canyon Skywalk in Arizona.

A horseshoe-shaped glass bridge, the Skywalk extends over the rim of the Grand Canyon to a length of about 70 feet. The bridge is maintained by the Hualapai, a federally recognized Indian tribe in northwest Arizona.

On June 5, after receiving a call about the man, a community-based rope rescue team dispatched a Kingman Ranger helicopter to the scene. The man was pronounced dead when a helicopter arrived.

The body was found and transported to the Hualapai Nation.

About a dozen people die in accidents at the Grand Canyon each year, most of them tourists, according to a National Park Service report.

2. Hiker’s death in the Grand Canyon

A woman from Indiana, USA, died on May 14 along a trekking route on the Colorado River, National Park Service officials reported.

The man’s body was found by police officials at Saxon Reef, a patch reef in the Outer Barrier Reef located 55 kilometers northeast of Kallins, Australia.

4. Woman dies after falling at Half Dome

In September 2019, the woman died after falling 500 feet down a steep, shallow slope while descending from the top of Half Dome.

The woman was part of a group of four trekking to the summit of Half Dome. Other members of the group said she turned around and left the group, while the other three climbed.

Ultimately, she fell and died while passing the steepest part of the route.

5. Indian couple falls to death in Yosemite

On October 25, 2018, Indian travel bloggers Vishnu Vishwanath and Meenakshi Moorthy met a tragic accident in which they fell to their deaths in Yosemite National Park, California, USA.

The couple fell off Taft Point, a famous tourist attraction in the national park. The incident occurred on October 25, 2018, but it took four days for authorities to finally rescue the bodies on October 29. Meenakshi was captured elsewhere. A photo of the couple shortly before her death.
