Debby Puts DC, Other Major Cities On High Alert For Tornadoes, Heavy Rainfall

Tropical Storm Debbie is approaching the northern Mid-Atlantic states on Friday, bringing heavy rain, the threat of major flooding and tornado warnings.

Tornado warnings were issued for Washington, D.C., Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia late Thursday night after Tropical Storm Debby brought heavy rains and tornadoes across the Carolinas. According to Hail and strong winds are also expected in the region, including the cities of Raleigh, Richmond and Lynchburg, according to the National Weather Service.

Debby is expected to move north across the United States, reaching Ontario, Canada as early as Friday and continuing until at least Tuesday. According to Get instant weather forecasts for Ontario.

The worst of the weather is expected to hit parts of Maryland and Connecticut Friday night. NBC and World BarTornado warnings were issued for parts of Maryland early Friday morning, and tornado watches are expected to remain in effect until at least 2 p.m.

“I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but forecasts are looking at Tropical Storm Debby bringing heavy rainfall across New York state,” New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochle said at a news conference Thursday. According to In the New York Daily News.

Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph from Philadelphia to New England, increasing the possibility of power outages, downed trees and other damage.
