Dems Call On Former Rep To Challenge Rick Scott In Florida Senate Race

A growing number of Democrats and Democratic groups are calling on former Florida Rep. Debbie Mukhersel-Powell to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Rick Scott for the seat in 2024, Politico said Friday. reported to

Congressional Democrats and Democratic groups, who see Mukhersel-Powell’s Hispanic background and fundraising abilities as valuable, are now rallying around her to win back some of the Florida senators. objecting to the seat.

Mukasser-Powell has not yet responded to a request for comment on whether he will run, according to Politico.

According to Politico, Mukhersel-Powell ran for and won the 2020 midterm elections in Miami-Dade County, Florida’s 26th congressional district, a hotly contested and important constituency for the Democratic Party. Democrats have praised her fundraising skills and Hispanic pedigree, as well as her electoral win in a state where a quarter of the population is Hispanic. “Debbie is urgently needed in the U.S. Senate. Her story, an immigrant who came to America with her mother at the age of 14 in search of the American Dream, is the story of many Floridians,” BOLD PAC Chairman said. Democratic California Representative Linda Sanchez said in a statement to Politico.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer discussed the possibility of a 2024 presidential election with Mukherser-Powell. The Democratic Senate Election Committee had planned to poll Mukasser-Powell’s chances of winning in July, Politico reported.

Scott, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2018, is already campaigning for re-election, according to Politico. Scott has served two terms as governor of Florida and has personally saved millions of dollars that can be used for the 2024 campaign.

“If the Florida Democrats think the solution to their problem is to have a radically liberal ex-Rep. is even worse. I wish them luck,” said Priscilla Ivasco, Scott’s communications director, Politico reported.

Mukhersel-Powell and Scott did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
