DeSoto State Park opens its newly improved pool area.

New Pool House Opens at DeSoto State Park

Local leaders recently came together to mark the unveiling of a new pool house at DeSoto State Park. Officials from the tourism sector and state parks participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which included the dedication of the lifeguard area and the newly constructed changing rooms. Notably, there are now ADA-compliant pathways leading to the pool, enhancing accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges.

“When I took on the role of commissioner for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources around eight years ago, it became apparent that many state parks had facilities in dire need of upgrades,” one official shared. “The pool house at DeSoto was one of those facilities. We aim for our state parks to offer excellent amenities for all visitors, and this new building is a significant step toward that goal.”

Thanks to voters approving an $85 million bond issue in 2022, numerous improvement projects across state parks have either been completed or are currently in the works. This funding, along with state park revenues, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill fund, and resources from the Federal American Rescue Plan Act, supports over $220 million in renovations at 21 state parks throughout Alabama.

Some notable projects include a new lodge at Cheaha State Park, a complete renovation of Lake Lurleen State Park, and an expansion of Gulf State Park campgrounds, which has recently received accolades as one of the best RV parks in the nation.

Last week, at Lake Point State Park, officials announced additional details about two dozen water and wastewater upgrades in Alabama State Parks, many utilizing locally manufactured ductile iron pipes.

“We truly appreciate all the support from Governor Kay Ivey, the Legislature, and local officials across the state,” Blankenship remarked. “Their steadfast backing has been essential in securing the funds needed for these vital improvements statewide, particularly in DeSoto State Park.”

Alabama Senators Nathaniel Ledbetter and Steve Livingston were present for the ribbon-cutting event as well. Although replacing the pool house may seem minor compared to other large projects, officials underscored its significant potential impact on the local community.

“DeSoto State Park is a major draw for those visiting the mountainous regions of our state, and tourism is crucial to our local economy,” Ledbetter explained. “This new facility will undoubtedly enhance the visitor experience. It’s rewarding to see how our legislative decisions can create meaningful benefits for both Alabamians and visitors to our wonderful state.”

“Alabama State Parks attract millions every year, and it’s exciting to witness projects like this come to fruition in DeSoto. Our parks are truly a gem for all Alabamians,” he added.

Matthew Capps, the Alabama State Parks Director, highlighted various swimming options now available for visitors and overnight guests. These options extend to parks like Gulf State Park, Oak Mountain State Park, Cheaha State Park, and others.

As a side note, many parks are gearing up for July 4th celebrations. DeSoto State Park will host its annual Independence Day event, along with several others across various parks. There’s a fireworks show at Oak Mountain State Park and a scavenger hunt at Cheaha State Park, among other festivities.

“I encourage everyone to get outdoors and explore Alabama State Parks during holiday weekends,” Capps suggested.
