Singer Coco Li, best known for starring in the Mandarin version of Disney’s “Mulan,” died Wednesday at the age of 48, according to a Facebook message posted by the sisters.

Li’s sister said, “For the past 29 years, she has not only brought us joy with her singing and dancing, but has also worked hard to break new ground for Chinese singers on the international music scene. Lee reportedly attempted to take his own life at home on Sunday and was rushed to a hospital where all efforts were made to rescue him. She fell into a coma and died three days later.

She is very well known in Asia, featured in the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and recognized for her talent with the Oscar-nominated song “A Love Before Time”.

The sisters said Li had struggled with depression for years and had sought professional help to overcome her struggles. According to the BBC, they noted that Lee’s condition had deteriorated sharply in recent months, ultimately leading to her attempted suicide.

Lee was named Miss Teen Chinatown in 1991, recognizing her as the first Chinese singer to have a big hit in the United States. Her hit single “Do You Want My Love” reached #4 on Billboard’s Hot Her Dance Her Breakout Her chart in 1999.

A formal autopsy has not yet been performed.
