Disturbing Details Of Bestiality Emerge During Sentencing Of BBC Zoologist Adam Britton

Supreme Court Justice Michael Grant on Thursday sentenced prominent British zoologist Adam Britton to 10 years and five months in prison for raping and torturing dozens of dogs.

Britton was previously a respected senior research fellow at Charles Darwin University and worked for the BBC and National Geographic. In September 2023, he pleaded guilty to 56 charges of bestiality and animal cruelty in the Northern Territory Supreme Court, but new details of his heinous acts were revealed in court during his sentencing. Ghastly details were revealed of what Judge Grant called “grotesque” and “unspeakable” crimes against animals, including the torture and exploitation of 42 dogs in a container on Britton's property, resulting in the deaths of 39 of them. Britton reportedly filmed many of the crimes in the container. Sky News.

According to Sky News, Judge Grant dismissed the courtroom staff during his sentencing remarks and warned those present that what he was about to say could cause “nervous shock or other adverse psychological reactions”.

“I am reluctant to do so but given the gross depravity and perversity of your conduct it is necessary for me to provide general representative details and an explanation of your offending in order to impose a sentence,” Judge Grant said.

The judge went on to say that Britton not only abused his own dogs, but also those of unsuspecting owners in the Darwin region of Australia, transporting the animals when their owners went off for work or travel, and filming himself raping and killing the animals in a shipping container that he described as a “torture chamber.”

“Your conduct on those occasions was depraved and reprehensible conduct totally beyond the bounds of ordinary human concept or understanding,” Judge Grant said. The judge said it was “clear” that Britton derived “perverse pleasure and excitement from the suffering of these animals”.

According to Sky News, Britton apologised and pleaded guilty to four charges of accessing and transmitting child abuse material. Judge Grant was not convinced by Britton's remorse.

“You made extensive use of weapons in the course of your activities,” he said, “and it is sickeningly clear, as the prosecution has acknowledged, that you derive pure and unadulterated pleasure from inflicting this torture.” (Related article: Many people are fed up with seagulls on the beach, but it's too much.)

“I have no doubt that had you not been arrested by police you would have continued this conduct,” he said, according to ABC News Australia.
