DNC Summer Meeting Highlights Land Acknowledgment
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is gearing up for its summer meeting on Monday, planning to kick things off with a discussion on “land approval.”
This meeting comes shortly after a Quinnipiac survey revealed that only 19% of respondents showed approval for the party’s congressional leadership. The DNC is also facing challenges in meeting its fundraising targets. After emphasizing loyalty and commitment, DNC Chair Ken Martin introduced several speakers, including Pastor Tim Waltz from a Minnesota church.
“We’re honored to have my friend from the Minnesota DFL, Treasurer Lindy Saumic, here to offer land acknowledgments,” Martin stated.
Land acknowledgments are often made to recognize the Indigenous peoples who originally inhabited the land where events occur, according to various sources.
“Good morning everyone,” Saumic began. “Let’s take a moment to think about the DNC members, friends, and our relationship with the land. The DNC honors the Dakota people, the original stewards of this land and the waters of Minneapolis. This land isn’t just claimed; it carries the weight of broken treaties and promises, reflecting a system that has often marginalized Indigenous culture and history.”
“As a Democrat, I encourage everyone to be thoughtful when considering land issues. Engage with your Indigenous neighbors, ask questions, and strive for partnerships. We must respect the heritage of this land and its original people with integrity, humility, and compassion. Thank you.”
