Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library reaches out to foster children in Alabama

Expanded Program for Alabama Foster Children

The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) and the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education (ADECE) are broadening the reach of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program to include foster children in Alabama.

Beginning in August, every child in foster care, aged 0 to 5, will be automatically signed up by DHR and will receive a complimentary book each month until they turn five.

“Every child in Alabama deserves a strong start, and it begins with reading,” stated Gov. Kay Ivey. “By providing a new book to the youngest Alabamians every month, we are nurturing a foundation for lifelong learning and success. We are thankful for the efforts of our HR department and the Department of Early Childhood Education in expanding this initiative.”

This year, Ivey had previously announced a statewide expansion of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for all children aged 0 to 5 in Alabama, which requires registration from parents or guardians. At present, DHR handles registrations for foster children for free, aiming to alleviate some burdens for parents.

“Foster children’s situations are often in flux, so I’m looking forward to these monthly book deliveries,” remarked Alabama DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner. “Providing these books is one way we can fulfill our mission.”

The Book Gift Program aims to foster a love for reading and promote early educational success. Currently, one in seven children under five in the United States receives books from the Imagination Library.

“I want to express gratitude to Alabama DHR for their strong leadership in supporting the education of all Alabama children,” Buckner added. “I also appreciate ADECE’s dedication to building a solid educational foundation and their partnership in cultivating a love for reading among foster children.”

A letter will be sent to assist parents caring for children in this age group.
