Teenager Trenton Pawlicki dies in winter weather outside Flagstaff
A Dolores teenager was killed Thursday in an accident outside Flagstaff while on his way to a BMX competition with his brother and father.
Trenton Pawlicki, 13, died in the accident. His father, Aaron Pawlicki, and 17-year-old brother, Devian Pawlicki, were injured.
Aaron and Devian Pawlicki were taken to Flagstaff Medical Center, according to a GoFundMe set up by Kylie Leitenberger. Devian Pawlicki reportedly suffered minor injuries. According to the latest information on GoFundMe, Aaron Pawlicki has been released from intensive care, but his recovery will take a long time.
“Aaron will be out of work for a period of time as he heals from his injury,” Leitenberger said. “They will have to cover medical, funeral and living expenses for the next few weeks.”
Devian and Trenton Pawlicki both attended Dolores' school.
It is unknown who was driving at the time of the accident.
Ann article KNAU and Arizona News attributed the crash to winter weather conditions on Interstate 17 in Mann's Park.
The Arizona Department of Safety said a black Toyota Scion hydroplaned and the driver lost control. A white Toyota RAV4 then crashed into the side of the Scion.
According to the report, Trenton Pawlicki was sitting in the left rear passenger seat where the crash occurred. Although he was wearing a seatbelt, he was thrown from the vehicle.
He died at the scene.
Northbound lanes of the interstate were closed for an hour.
A GoFundMe organized for the Pawlicki family has raised more than $39,000 as of this writing as the community rallied to support the family.
A fund for the family has also been established at Dolores State Bank.
