“Multiple callers heard screaming and yelling and what sounded like two gunshots.” They reported multiple gunshots rang out at two homes in the Wildwood Estates community Tuesday morning. These are the words of a Yavapai County dispatcher when a person reported the incident.
According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO), around 9 a.m., a woman who was shot by her estranged husband ran to her neighbor’s house across the street. When she reached her neighbor’s house, her husband chased her and was shot dead by the neighbor, according to people living nearby.
“He’s out with a resident who’s a former reserve deputy. He has two people at gunpoint with gunshot wounds. I’m going to take him into custody,” the deputy said over the police radio. told the official.
YCSO said the neighbor who shot her husband is retired and is now a reserve deputy with the sheriff’s office. In a statement after the shooting, the man said he was “forced to intervene by firing his weapon to deter further threats from my husband.”
The husband and wife, who have not been identified, both survived the gunshot wounds.
12News spoke to several neighbors, including friends of the couple. They didn’t want anyone to speak on camera. But one person called the reserve congressman “a highly respected member of our community.”
All had no doubt that he was doing everything he could to help his wife, who was running for her life.
Yavapai County Sheriff David Rose released the following statement regarding the two shootings:
“This incident is a stark reminder of the dedication of our men and women in uniform, both on and off duty. I would like to thank all the enforcement agencies.” – Sheriff David Rose
YCSO said the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) will handle the investigation because the shooting involved an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) officer.
It is unclear whether the reserve deputy is in police custody. He has also not been identified.
DPS “does not comment on ongoing criminal investigations.”
