Downtown Yuma fire destroys 1891 historic building

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma Police say after an investigation, an unknown suspect started a structure fire at a vacant home at 452 South Maiden Lane and the historic Southern Pacific freight station at 430 South Main Street.

The Yuma Fire Department responded to the fire Wednesday just before 5 p.m.

“Fortunately, firefighters worked quickly and were able to get the fire under control,” said Yuma Fire Department Capt. David Padilla Jr. “They prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring properties and also prevented the fire from causing additional injuries.”

According to the Yuma Police Department (YPD), fire crews found a vacant home on fire about 200 feet east of the freight station.

Both fires have been extinguished and no injuries have been reported.

Many Youmans said they were devastated by the loss.

“I feel like everyone who grew up here has had a photo taken there. It's a part of Yuma's history, but it burned down and we don't have it anymore,” said Tatum Ward, a staff member at Level and Lobe.

“I know our police and fire departments are working really hard, and if there's someone responsible, what can we do to bring justice to this system,” Yuma Mayor Douglas Nichols said.

YPD said fire investigators with the Yuma Fire Department determined the fire was intentionally set.

Both buildings were destroyed by fire, according to YPD.

Yuma police said detectives from the Property Crimes Unit are investigating the suspects in the incident.
