Yavapai County, Arizona — A suspected fentanyl pill weighing more than 50 pounds en route to Denver was intercepted Monday by state troopers during a traffic stop on Interstate 17.
A Toyota Camry driving north on the highway was stopped by a police officer near Anthem due to an equipment violation. DPS pursued the getaway vehicle along Interstate 17 as the driver started during a traffic stop.
The driver eventually stopped near Milepost 254 and was detained by officers, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Investigators said they found about 54 pounds of fentanyl tablets and 2.5 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the suspect’s car. Some of the tablets were hidden inside the beer cartons.
DPS said drugs were being transported from Phoenix to Denver.
The driver, identified as Omar Arias, 28, was incarcerated at the Yavapai County Jail on drug charges.
