A dump truck collided with a busy intersection in South Huntsville on Wednesday afternoon, injuring two people and causing significant damage to the nearby Target store. The crash happened around 1:30 PM on Carl T. Jones Drive, where it was reported that the truck’s brakes failed while driving downhill.
According to a local source, the truck lost its brakes and sped down a slope before it crashed into a car waiting at a traffic light. The vehicle then veered into a “six-lane intersection” and ultimately collided with the Target store.
The driver of the car was unharmed, although their vehicle sustained serious damage.
Following the collision, the dump truck continued forward, crashing into the Target store. This resulted in injuries for some passengers and trapped the truck driver inside. Emergency crews from Huntsville Fire and Rescue, along with the Madison County Rescue Squad, took nearly two hours to rescue the driver.
Don Webster, a spokesperson for HEMSI, mentioned that one passenger was taken to Trauma Services at Huntsville Hospital in stable condition, while their injuries were considered life-threatening. Another individual was also being assessed after the accident.
While the towing crew worked on removing the vehicle, part of the store’s awning collapsed, creating a significant hole in the building’s brick wall. Despite the damage, the Target store on Carl T. Jones Drive remained open, with most of the destruction confined to the store’s exterior.
The Huntsville Police Department is investigating the incident. At this point, there are no signs of criminal activity, but the traffic homicide division has been called in to look into the serious nature of the crash.
