EAC’s 24th Annual Student Chemistry Adventure brings chemistry to life for high school students

Thatcher, Arizona — For 31 years, Eastern Arizona College has hosted high school chemistry students from rural Arizona schools in its annual Student Chemistry Adventure S=CH-A.

Last month, the Department of Chemistry at Eastern Arizona University welcomed 96 high school students and their teachers to its 31st anniversary celebration.cent Annual Student Chemistry Adventure. Twenty unique teams from rural Arizona high schools registered for a day of great chemistry.

Teams of 3-4 students competed against each other while rotating through 4 separate chemistry activities. Joel Shelton EA Chemistry Professor speed activity contest Students performed several short activities in 55 minutes.of knowledge contest, A team led by Administrative Assistant Valerie Hale had assembled a team to work together to answer chemistry questions. Dr. Phil McBride, EAC Senior Dean, has students create fluorescent “gummy worm” polymers, experiment with dry ice, split water into hydrogen and oxygen in colorfully charged solutions, and discover unknown metals. was measured.

After lunch provided by the EAC’s Campus Dining Service, students and teachers moved to the Great Lecture Hall in the Mathematics and Science Building. The audience was treated to colorful, loud, bright and exciting chemistry demonstrations presented by the students of organic chemistry at the University of Despain. Attendees witnessed numerous demonstrations, including a special ice cream made using liquid nitrogen. The audience was amazed by the “elephant toothpaste,” which sprayed bubbles that reached the ceiling. The magic show culminated in a screaming, dancing and burning gummy he worm.

McBride commended all participants and thanked the high school chemistry teachers for their efforts in providing quality instruction to their students.of fantastic four The Wilcox High School team, consisting of Zenailee Medina, Reggie Martinez, Vinny DeRosa, Maylee Thompson and AJ Brown, won by a narrow margin. great on a regular basis The Duncan High School team, which consisted of Logan Basteen, Emily Hilton, Kayleigh Kempton and Bryant Rapier, finished first by three points (260 to 257). 3rd place medal and team shield atom family, From Morenci High School featuring Josh Biggs, Isabel Schock and Quinton Wiltbank.
