Thatcher, Arizona — The English department at Eastern Arizona College kicked off its annual English Honors Night last week with 11 awards.th Annual research essay contest. For this competition, applicants must be nominated by an English department faculty member who considers the student’s work to be an excellent example of research and writing. After a panel of EAC faculty reviewed the nominations, three students were recognized for excellence in writing.
Rachel Peterson won first prize for her essay “Genetic Engineering: A Possible Future for Humankind.” The second-place essay, “The Final Words of Our Dying Oceans,” was written by Jessica Clough. Third place went to Kinsey Blank’s “Gender Inequality in Education in Afghanistan”.
The evening continued with 14 students representing a variety of majors being inducted into the Beta Zeta chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta, the National Honor Society of the UK, at the chapter’s 9th annual ceremony.
The Sigma Kappa Delta recognizes excellence in the areas of writing, reading and critical thinking. All Beginners must have completed at least one of her courses in College English with a ‘B’ or higher and must maintain a minimum of her GPA overall of 3.0.
This year’s Hall of Fame inductees are Dylen Aker, Jacob Bigelow, Patrick Chavez, Celinda Delgado, Lisa Edwards, Mikayla Evans, Kathryn Ferrin, Matilda Hilton, Tyler Lewis, Josiah Leyva and Cecilia Madrid. , Isabella Ceballos, Isabelle Schock and Caroline Suorza.
The ceremony was officiated by EAC English Teacher Sponsors Dr. Jacob Lauritzen, Dr. Mary Ann Larson and Helen Robinson. Dr. Peter Chidester, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Fine Arts, was the keynote speaker.
