Elevate Southwest Introduces a New STEM Community in Yuma

Yuma’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative

Yuma, Arizona is embarking on an ambitious effort to foster innovation and entrepreneurship. Southwest is introducing a startup and research ecosystem designed to transform the area’s economic landscape over the next 15 years.

During a recent presentation, leaders Jerry Cabrera and Aaron Lewis provided insights into the initiative. The strategy includes a 60,000-square-foot research facility being developed in partnership with the city and a 65-acre innovation park aimed at nurturing STEM-based ideas, guiding them from initial concepts to market-ready products.

“It’s about creating a complete ecosystem that enhances economic diversity,” Cabrera remarked. “We’re looking to hire around 1,500 people over the next decade and a half. This is a call to action. We see ourselves not just as innovators but also as venture capitalists who can help realize these visions.”

This initiative emphasizes community collaboration, working alongside Arizona Western College and all three public universities in the state. Cabrera noted that this foundation will offer students in Yuma practical opportunities in areas like aerospace, clean energy, agtech, and biotechnology.

Lewis pointed out the crucial roles of fundraising and mentorship in turning local ideas into reality.

“Everyone can have great ideas, but succeeding requires resources for prototyping, R&D, and market entry,” he said. “That’s why we’re actively seeking local venture capitalists and mentors to support the next wave of innovators.”

A Vision for the Future

Elevate Southwest aims for significant long-term impacts, targeting a $2 billion economic boost, with hopes of establishing Yuma as a national hub for STEM innovation.

“I want to ensure that students can stay here without needing to leave for opportunities,” Cabrera stated. “We are building something that will not only benefit Yuma but also the broader region.”

As these programs begin to take shape, community feedback has been overwhelmingly supportive, with local government, educational institutions, and industry partners rallying around the vision.

“This is about making lasting change, starting right here in Yuma.”
