Elgin winery named third best in nation by USA Today readers’ poll

Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — Southern Arizona wineries have rounded out the top three in USA Today’s new reader poll, The 10 Best New Winery Experiences in America.

Relatively new to the region’s winemaking community, Los Milix Vineyards Elgin, Arizona’s history dates back to 2014 when owner Pavle Milic launched the label in the Sonoita wine growing region.

Reader polls highlight modern geometric art and architecture on site as part of the winery visit experience. Elgin’s wineries are “designed to help us enjoy our landscapes and connect with nature,” according to Ross Miliks.

Los Miliks’ operations include a complete wine production facility on the Elgin property, as well as vineyards in both Elgin and Elfrida to the east.

Located south of Tucson, primarily in Santa Cruz County, Sonoita American Viticultural Area Most of the area lies at 4,500 and 5,500 feet above sea level, which is sufficient elevation for the vines to grow and expose themselves to favorable temperatures during the growing season from April to October.

The AVA’s climate, soil and topographical differences all help inform winegrowers in the region which types of grapes they can grow and what wine styles they can produce.

Elgin’s first commercial vineyard was planted in 1979, according to Visit Tucson. AVA was officially established in 1984 and was the first in the state to earn the designation.

The Sonoita/Elgin Chamber of Commerce has a list of AVAs. Winery on website.
