New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik said the United States is allowing a hostile foreign country to “brainwash” college students.
Stefanik told WMAL talk show host and Daily Caller Editor-in-Chief Vince Colyanese that he made headlines for questioning then-Harvard University President Claudine Gay about anti-Semitism on campus. He said there was another issue that received little attention. “When it comes to the rise of anti-Semitism on campus, we are allowing our adversaries to spew propaganda and try to brainwash the next generation of students,” Stefanik told Colyanese. “I'm very concerned about Qatari money going into Middle East studies departments. And one of the questions I asked the president of Harvard University (now a former president) is one that doesn't get much media coverage. No, but it was very, very important. How much foreign currency do you have?”
listen:
“She wouldn't answer any questions,” Stefanik said.
Qatar donated $4.7 billion to American universities from 2001 to 2021. according to to the National Association of Scholars.
“House Republicans passed a bill called the Deterrence Act, which lowers the threshold for disclosing foreign contributions to $50,000,” Stefanik continued. “So there needs to be accountability and transparency. It's very common sense.”
After the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, there were numerous pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses.
