Democrat Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin failed to answer directly on Sunday when asked if she believed biological men should participate in women’s sports after NBC news host Kristen Welker asked her about the issue.
In the release of his first podcast episode, Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom elicited backlash from members of his own party on Thursday, saying it was “deeply unfair” for biological men to participate in women’s sports. After playing a clip of Slotkin’s Newsom statement on “Meet the Press,” Welker asked the senator if he agreed to the California governor’s stance. “Well, look, I think you have to talk to Mr. Newsom and his podcast. It’s a good controversy, so we’re all talking about it. For me, I grew up playing sports for three seasons. In Michigan, sports are like our religion, right? I wouldn’t be here, I had no leadership training I gained in women’s sports,” Slotkin said.
“But for me, let the local community understand this. In Michigan, there’s a process in which a boy born wants to get exemptions if he wants to play in women’s sports,” Slotkin added. It has been done twice statewide. ”

Slotkin argued that the issue of biological men playing in women’s sports should be determined at the local level, and said the topic was raised “to fly sparks.”
“So let the community handle that issue, just like everything at school. But for me, I think it’s like I grew up creating sparks and seeing sparks fly,” Slotkin concluded.
