Emily Fisher, fifth grade teacher at Marshall Magnet School, was named Coconino County’s 2023 Teacher of the Year at a ceremony on April 20, hosted by the Coconino County Superintendent of Schools.
He told the Arizona Daily Sun newspaper, “It’s a really special feeling when we can learn as a community and be dumb together and understand the team we’ve built.”… [You] Get to know them and watch them all grow. “
Fisher taught at Marshall Elementary School for 13 years, served on the Active Action Support Committee, and chaired the Science Council.
“She loves learning and wants others to love learning too.
Rookie Teacher of the Year winner, Josie Teegardin, has been teaching at MEMS since 2021 after students taught at school. She has led trips for the Alpine Program, provided after-school tutoring, coached women’s soccer, and hosted apprenticeships for teacher training.

Brad Houston of Grand Canyon School received this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been teaching at the school for his 17 years, according to his statement, after a “career in the high-tech industry”.
Teacher of the Year is intended to recognize teachers in Coconino County’s K-12 grades. A total of 27 teachers were nominated for this year’s awards, with 19 nominated for Teacher of the Year and 8 for New Teacher of the Year.
Each finalist, announced at the beginning of the month, received cash prizes and a nomination for the Arizona Teacher of the Year Award. As the county’s teacher of the year, Fisher receives his one-year lease from his Findlay Toyota in Flagstaff.
The Coconino County Teacher of the Year Awards are sponsored by several local businesses, organizations and community members.
The other two finalists were Lisa Bernard from Sinagua Middle School and Kate Haynes from Knolles Elementary School.

Elaine Layman, Emma Ricciardi and Michelle Weidinger from DeMiguel Elementary. Kathleen Markassian at Thomas Elementary School. Allison Mitkowski of Williams High School. Coconino High School Jesse O’Keeffe. Roman Sanchez from Heritage Elementary and Mandy Wilson from Flagstaff Christian School.
