“Despite our pleas, the federal government's flawed immigration policies have strained our shelter system and failed to provide relief, so I put the people of New York above party and politics,” Adams continued.
Governor Adams announced budget cuts to several city services in November 2023 to accommodate the need to house more than 100,000 migrants moving to New York City. He also announced in January that he would sue bus companies that transport migrants into the city, citing financial difficulties the city faces because of the influx of migrants. Republican Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Doug Ducey of Arizona have begun busing migrants to New York City and other so-called “sanctuary” cities in 2022.
“Yes, I am speaking directly to the administration, this is an issue that we have to get a solution from both Congress and the administration on immigration. [also] “The administration needs to address the immediate needs that we have,” Adams said after a January 2023 visit to the southern border.
New York City officially became a sanctuary city in 2017. According to Ed Koch, then the Democratic mayor of New York City, Presidential Decree In 1989, it banned police officers from cooperating with federal immigration authorities under certain circumstances.
“I knew that if I stood up for you, I would be a target, and I have been,” Adams said in a statement. “For months, leaks and rumors have been directed at me in an attempt to discredit me and incriminate me. Just last week, police searched the home of our newly appointed Police Commissioner, looking for documents that are 20 years old, just one week after he joined my Administration. Enough is enough! I will fight these injustices with all my might and all my spirit.”
