“You’re probably more than anyone I’ve ever talked about, from one world to a completely different world,” Carlson said. “So you were in the world of digital money. Now you’re in a world of moneylessness. What’s the medium of exchange in prison?”

“You know, that’s anything people have,” Bankmanfried replied before explaining the type of muffins he trades. He likened them to the “plastic wrapped” muffins sold by gas stations.

“It’s like the standard,” Bankmanfleet said. “It’s either a packet of fish ramen soup in oil at room temperature, or a kind of nasty little foil package.”

“[Muffins are] Currency for your needs. They have nothing else. They don’t recommend themselves that often, but at the end of the day they’re kind of a go-to,” he added. “They aren’t exactly resolved, but they’re close enough. You know, the two muffins are similar, so they swap each other. Unless you’re dealing with more than $5, they’re kind of work, right? If you want to do a $200 transaction with a muffin, it doesn’t work physically, right?”

Carlson replied that it was “hard” and the banker agreed.

“One thing you really notice right away is that all the magnitudes are very diminished in prisons,” he continued. “You see people go into a boxing fight on one banana. Not because they care so much, but because what else is there to guide your compassion?”

Carlson said it was “stricken” and Bankmanfried agreed again. He asked if Bankmanfried would eat muffins or use them for currency.

“I don’t actually eat them. I mainly eat rice, beans and ramen,” he said.

“Oh, well, that seemed good for you,” Carlson said.
