Decorated Special Forces veterans from Baldwin County have kicked off their campaign to represent Alabama’s First Congressional District.
Joshua Mackey announced his candidacy on Tuesday, vowing to “raise America’s first flag and keep Alabama’s voice strong on the national stage.”
“The attacks on Washington’s spending, open borders, and our constitutional rights are eroding the country we fought for,” Mackey stated.
“I fought against America’s enemies overseas. Now, I’m prepared to tackle the threats to our freedom at home. The First District of Alabama deserves a new chapter in conservative leadership. I am committed to fighting for my family, defending our values, and ensuring Washington serves the people.”
The Bronze Star recipient acknowledged and praised Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), the current officeholder, who has stepped down to pursue a Senate bid. Mackey promised to uphold Moore’s dedication to his constituents.
“Barry Moore was a principled voice for our district. I respect his legacy and am ready to advocate for our borders, our freedom, and America’s first agenda,” he added.
Mackey’s campaign will focus on several key issues:
- Secure borders and crush cartels – applying tactical precision from his combat experience.
- Advocacy for constitutional rights – a no-compromise approach, particularly concerning the Second Amendment.
- Put America first – which involves protecting American jobs, revamping manufacturing, and reducing foreign dependence.
- Reform the VA – ensuring that veterans are not neglected.
- End waste in Washington – returning strength to the nation, communities, and families.
Mackey resides in Baldwin County with his wife Jennifer. His life journey, from childhood to Special Forces, is described as one built without applause.
Former Congressman Jerry Carl is also vying for the district he lost in 2024 to Barry Moore, and State Sen. Lett Marquez (R-Enterprise) is set to declare his candidacy as well.
The GOP primary is slated for May 19, 2026.
