Family’s Concerns Led to Surrender of Suspected Charlie Kirk Assassin
On Friday, former NYPD inspector Paul Mauro discussed the recent events surrounding the suspected assassin of Charlie Kirk, stating that the family of the alleged shooter was worried about potential violence and decided it was best to take action to prevent any tragedy.
Authorities have identified the suspected shooter as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who was named following a tip from a family friend to law enforcement Thursday evening. During an appearance on “Kudrow,” Mauro detailed the timeline of Robinson’s escape and eventual surrender.
“By the end of 9-11, his father contacted a retired US official,” Mauro noted. “In a community south of St. George that has many retirees, he knew the guy. It’s unclear if his son acknowledged what he had done, but the family feared that if they didn’t intervene, they might end up being part of a bigger incident, like something the police would have to handle.”
Mauro highlighted how the family was worried about violent encounters should authorities locate Robinson first and urge him to surrender in a non-confrontational manner.
“So, officers were trying to force the door, taking a more aggressive approach, while the children were attempting to intervene. The family was trying to keep things orderly,” he added.
Notably, Mauro mentioned that the suspect’s family bypassed conventional law enforcement methods. Instead, they took him straight to the Washington County Jail. “It’s a much different dynamic. A group like this went directly to the sheriff’s office, which is part of why he ended up in the custody of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office,” Mauro explained. “They must have had some kind of connection that facilitated this. They informed the sheriff, who then reached out to the task force.”
Robinson is accused of fatally shooting Kirk while he was speaking to students at Utah Valley University. After recognizing his son in photos released by police, Robinson’s father confronted him and alerted authorities about the situation. Reportedly, Robinson expressed a preference for taking his own life rather than surrendering. His father urged him to speak with a young pastor who was a former US task force member.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox mentioned on Friday that investigators found provocative phrases engraved on the shell casings used in the shooting, with messages like “Hey Fascist! Catch!” and “If you read this, you are gay lmao.” Another inscription referenced “Bellachao,” which has ties to left-wing resistance groups, as noted by George Mason University.
