Jon Lovett, a former speechwriter for President Barack Obama, said on his podcast on Tuesday that Vice President Kamala Harris should embrace an “I don't care” attitude when answering interview questions.
In a recent interview, Harris spoke with celebrity Oprah Winfrey, and the video went viral after she said she would shoot an intruder in her home. On the podcast “Pod Save America,” Jon Lovett praised her response and said one of the flaws in Harris' campaign is that she runs a “very disciplined campaign.”
“My favorite part was this joke that she does all the time, 'My staff needs to clean up a little bit,' which is like, 'I'm not going to read from a teleprompter. I don't need a teleprompter. I probably shouldn't say this. I'm going to get in trouble for saying this, so I'm going to be told not to say it.' Forget the content. It was a moment where she was like, 'I don't care about the talking points. I want to hear more directly from me,'” Lovett said.
“I think Kamala Harris is running a very disciplined campaign. The problem is, she's running a very disciplined campaign,” Lovett continued. “Donald Trump is an anti-establishment, but he's running as an insurrectionist, even though he's fighting to protect the privileges of the wealthiest and the traditional privileges of the most powerful in our country.”
Lovett said the campaign is a way to move beyond an “it doesn't matter” mindset, noting that those moments can be “really priceless.” (Related: Former Clinton pollster says Trump needs to draw 'clear economic contrast' with Harris, who can get by on 'being liked')
clock:
“And the more we can embody that 'I don't care' mentality — 'I'm not going to follow talking points. I'm just going to say what I really think. I'm not going to be just a typical politician,' I think those moments are really valuable,” Lovett said. “That made it even more valuable to me. That piece of, 'My staff has to get this done,' was what really made me like, 'Oh, good.'”
After Harris and Winfrey's conversation, Keisha Lance Bottoms, a senior adviser to the vice president, told CNN that Harris was “joking” and that she knows “everything she says is going to be criticized.”
Harris has previously given repetitive answers in interviews that political commentators have warned could be her downfall this election season. In a Sept. 13 interview with Philadelphia's 6ABC Action News, she rambled on about her middle-class upbringing, lawns and plans to make life more affordable for Americans.
