Exceptional Anglers event, Gone Fishin’, Not Just Wishin’, returns to Oak Mountain State Park

The Alabama Department of Conservation announced that its annual Exceptional Anglers event, “Gone Fishin', Not Just Wishin',” will return next week at Oak Mountain State Park.

The event will take place May 8-10 and will teach basic fishing skills to students with disabilities from the Alabaster City, Pelham City, Shelby County and Jefferson County school systems.

“Community fishing events like this benefit so many children and seniors across our state,” said Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Director Chris Blankenship. “This event is made possible thanks to the dedicated work of our volunteers and the support of our sponsors.”

“We are so grateful for their support in enriching the lives of our students and ensuring access to outdoor recreation for all Alabamians.”

During the event, students not only fish, but also have the opportunity to participate in art projects, learn about fish and wildlife, perform with local musicians, listen to storytellers and learn water safety tips, including proper life jacket use.
