Massachusetts school districts have announced new job openings for staff affinity group coordinators, according to a report released Thursday.
On March 27, 2025, Newton Public School’s Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is said to have announced the creation of new roles, including “Color Affinity Group Coordinator Staff” and “LGBTQ+ Staff Affinity Group Coordinator.” According to First shared parental advocacy education (PDE) dispatch with the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“The affinity group is created to separate and divide district staff by their skin color and sexual orientation, and rather than bringing them together,” Casey Ryan, an investigative reporter for PDE, told DCNF. “Given the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibits separation in public education, it is very illegal for districts to not only promote affinity groups, but hire staff to coordinate them across schools.

The district is considering hiring two total coordinators for each primary, secondary and high school position. Work responsibilities include holding monthly meetings of “social/community building,” “microattack management,” and “self-care,” according to documents obtained by the PDE. The documents state that these meetings are[A]Colored staff. ”
The position also requires staff to “host improvised, safe spaces in response to district, state or national cases.”
This position is supported by grants provided by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). “DESE Teacher Diversification GrantAccording to Dese’s website, the aim is to “develop a robust pipeline by increasing the number of diverse and prepared educators and leaders.”
