Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz introduced a bill Tuesday that would codify the rights of states to protect their southern borders.
The Daily Caller first obtained a copy of the bill, titled the “State Border Security Act.” The bill would specifically prohibit federal agents from removing barbed wire or other barriers erected by state governments within 25 miles (40 kilometers) of the U.S.-Mexico border. This is a companion bill to the House of Representatives introduced by Republican Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance in January.
“Last month, the Supreme Court gave the Biden administration authority to tear down the border fence that Texas installed to protect its citizens from illegal aliens. It would codify that states have the right to defend their territory,” Gates told Caller before introducing the bill.
