Local resident Troy Vickers has declared his intention to run for a seat on the Fairhope city council, aiming to challenge incumbent Jack Burrell. Since relocating to Fairhope with his wife Diane in 2022, Vickers believes his background as a civil engineer and his civic involvement have motivated him to enter this race.
After attending a council meeting, Vickers expressed feeling overlooked by city officials, prompting him to share his dissatisfaction with the council. “I left that meeting feeling like I was really ignored as a citizen. No one should be treated that way,” he said, emphasizing the need for a more receptive approach to residents’ concerns.
This experience pushed him, he explained, to represent the community and ensure their voices are heard.
Vickers, originally from Mississippi, earned his civil engineering degree from Mississippi State University. His work in environmental compliance and project management has given him the credentials to run his own consulting firm and become a licensed engineer in Alabama and other states. He noted that his experience with large projects and navigating regulations could be vital for Fairhope’s ongoing growth, particularly referencing recent infrastructure issues like water management bans as indicators of the challenges ahead.
His campaign will prioritize enhancing infrastructure, preserving the city’s historic charm, advocating for responsible budgeting, and overseeing sustainable growth. He’s also keen on focusing on public safety and protecting Mobile Bay, ensuring that downtown Fairhope maintains its unique character. Alongside his wife, Vickers is active in various local organizations, such as 3 Circle Church, Fairhope Arts Center, Theatre 98, and Mobile Baykeeper.
Fairhope’s city elections are scheduled for August 26th.
