Family of 3 disappears in Arizona, car was traveling on I-40

The family’s car rental was last known to be driving along Interstate 40 on March 13 near the fatal 22 pileup site.

Coconino County, Arizona – The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information about South Korean families who apparently disappeared during their holiday near the Grand Canyon.

The three family members have been missing for more than a week. They are identified as Ji-young Kim, Taehee Kim and Janggie Kim.

The family was last known to travel to Las Vegas in a 2024 white BMW rental car from the Grand Canyon area to Las Vegas. Car GPS data was last detected on March 13th, travelling along westbound Interstate 40 at about 3:30pm

A fiery 22 car chain reaction collision was reported on the I-40 during a snow storm on March 13th. A total of five people died as a result of the crash.

The sheriff’s office was unable to confirm whether the missing family was involved in the crash.

Sheriff’s officials said they questioned whether the crash caused the family to be rerouted to the Forest Service roads. Investigators have not detected family phone or credit card use.

That’s why investigators returned to the scene of that violent crash, hoping to bring answers to their loved ones waiting for them in Korea.

“It just means you can’t recognize cars, so there’s a lot of work needed,” John Paxton told the Sheriff’s Office.

The car they travel to has a California license plate number “9khn768”.

The South Korean Consulate is working with Arizona officials to find family.

Anyone with information will be asked to contact the CCSO at 928-774-4523.
