Family petitions BOS for help improving safety on Highway 70 after fatal collision

SAFORD – The movement born out of tragedy continued on Monday as friends and family of Sharon and David Kront, David Mitchell Ostberg, asked the Graham County Board of Supervisors for help during a Monday morning meeting.

David and Sharon Krontz, 71, and their grandson, David Mitchell Ostberg, 24, attend the Krons’ great-grandson’s birthday party in the Mesa area on April 15 in Solomons. I was driving home to the district when a drunk driver entered. A head-on collision from their lane killed David and Sharon on the spot. Mitchell was seriously injured and was trapped in the vehicle for several hours as firefighters cut it open and rescued him. After getting through the turmoil, he was taken to San Carlos Apache Health Care and then to OnaHealth Scottsdale Osborne Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The accident also killed the driver and passenger of the vehicle at fault. The driver was said to have been drunk.

The accident occurred around 8:35 p.m. in the Peridot area of ​​Milepost 274, just east of San Carlos, in a 105 mph zone and was investigated by the San Carlos Police Department in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

On Monday, family members Pamela Krontz-Bigler, Lisa Krontz and Shelia Packer were at the BOS meeting. The women are the daughters of Sharon and David Klontz, and Pamela is the mother of David Mitchell Ostberg.

Addressing a board meeting, Pamela said she felt there had to be something positive to come out of this tragedy. She then said, “highway justice”, and recently held a community event to bring together movements to improve highway safety. While on the podium, Pamela displayed a stack of documents that she said were online and in-person petitions in support of the group’s attempts at change. “No amount of words can bring my family back, but we knew something good could come out of an event as terrible as this,” she said. “Our family relationships will be forever changed, but maybe we can save other families and entire communities from loss of life, injuries and the fact that people are scared to drive on the highway. Pamela told BOS that her group is campaigning to build U.S. Highway 70 as a split highway between Grove and Pima, with additional safety drawers and shoulders. Drunk driving checkpoint. Increase law enforcement patrols. and strengthen coordination among government agencies.

“So I stand before you today to address what I feel we must do to protect the people who have chosen you to serve and protect the people of Graham County. To that end, we ask for your help in seeking funding from the local, state, and even federal levels.”

After Pamela’s time ended, the board returned to its normal scheduled working session.
