Yuma, Arizona (azfamily) – Just as President Donald Trump waffles in workplace raids, Yuma farmers are expressing their dissatisfaction with an uncertain future.
“That’s not right. We’re going through this,” said Francisco Claveros, a farm worker in Yuma County. Claveros is one of the thousands of farm workers who crossed the border every day to keep the country running.
“People may be afraid to go to work,” said Jose, another farm worker. Jose said there was a rumbling of fear among the workers. Yuma was not the target of the ice attack, but they are looking at online reports from fellow farm workers targeted in California.
In Yuma, the farm currently envelops melon and watermelon harvests. When the season ends, some workers usually chase the farm into California. With uncertainty going on, Jose said some workers may be hesitant to go, as it is where many of the recent attacks have taken place.
President Trump continues to pledge support for farmers, but his administration has not put forward any clear policies and Trump has been inconsistent over the past week alone, doubling his stance on increasing deportation. “We have to look after farmers. We have to look after the people who run leisure hotels. We have to look after them. Most importantly, we have to drive criminals out of our country,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, Trump proposed a $5 million “playing card.” This is more green cards for large companies than for the agricultural sector. “These are people who work for businesses like Apple. I think Apple is going to buy a lot of people because they can’t bring people to the country,” Trump said.
Last week, after a brief hiatus on workplace raids at farms and hotels, ice agents were given orders to resume the raid. “Yes, we’re all afraid. There’s always fear, but now it’s fine,” one worker said.
