Firefighters Rescue Woman Who Fell Down 25-Foot Sinkhole

Firefighters in California rescued a woman who fell into an 8-meter-high sinkhole Thursday, ABC7 reported.

The 40-year-old mother was reportedly trapped in a sinkhole just outside her mobile home in Fontana before first responders could rescue her. ABC7. The woman's children heard her cries for help and told neighbors that their mother had fallen into a hole, the paper said.

A neighbor told ABC7 that the victim “had a little boy, 8 months old. The sisters heard him crying and said, 'Oh, where's mommy?' So I went outside and saw a hole.” ”

A 911 caller reported the accident, ABC7 reported.

“The 911 caller did everything correctly,” San Bernardino Fire Department officials said. “They did not attempt to enter the hole or do anything that might create new victims.”

After rescuers arrived, fire officials reported the woman was “awake and talking,” according to ABC7.

Rescue teams lowered firefighters into the hole to pull the woman to safety shortly after 10:30 a.m., ABC7 reported.

Rescue teams were able to use cables attached to winches for an hour to pull the woman out of the sinkhole and into an ambulance to take her to the hospital, ABC7 reported.

“She was scared and crying. Everyone was saying, 'It's okay, it's okay,' but she didn't look okay,” neighbor Lizeth Gonzalez told ABC7.

The woman suffered only minor injuries, the newspaper reported.

The rescue effort took two hours, ABC7 reported, but it's unclear how long the victims were trapped in the sinkhole.
