‘Firestorm’: Philly Mayor May Have Just Accidentally Leaked Kamala Harris’ VP Pick

According to Philly Magazine's Ernest Owens, Philadelphia Mayor Sherrell Parker may have let slip in an ill-timed tweet on Friday that Kamala Harris has chosen Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro as her running mate.

Parker tweeted a video promoting the Harris and Shapiro campaigns, with a caption that suggested Harris was her choice.

I'm proud to be back with the support of so many leaders across the region. Kamala Harris The President and J.Osh Shapiro “VP nominee!” Parker tweeted on Friday afternoon.

The video ends with several people, who appear to be Pennsylvania residents, saying, “We support Kamala Harris for president and Josh Shapiro for vice president.”

The tweet did not directly mention Shapiro as the running mate, but Owens reported that Parker's office had not planned to tweet the video until Monday, when Harris was set to announce her running mate.

“I'm being told by a Philadelphia political source that a staff member associated with Mayor Sherrell Parker's team accidentally posted this video today,” Owens tweeted. “The video was scheduled for Monday, after VP Kamala Harris was scheduled to announce the pick: Josh Shapiro.”

Owens also reported that there had been an “intense backlash” over the allegedly ill-timed tweet.

Rumors about Harris' potential running mate have been circulating for weeks, and while other candidates such as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have been mentioned, Shapiro has consistently been at the top of discussion about potential running mates. While Shapiro appears to be popular, some on the far left oppose his selection because of his stance on education and Israel. Some Democrats have argued that opposition to his candidacy is anti-Semitic because Shapiro, who is Jewish, does not take a significantly different position on Israel than the other vice presidential candidates.
