Five local high school students earn medals in national competitions

121 local students attended the national conference of their respective career and technical student organizations

Yuma, AZ (KYMA, KECY) – The Yuma Union High School District (YUHSD) sent students to their respective Career and Technical Student Organizations’ national conventions during the summer. Five students were named top three and her two national winners.

Kofa High School’s Lillian Madrid won a Gold Medal for Lesson Planning and Implementation for Career and Technical Education at the Educators’ Rising National Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Jesús Torres of Cibola High School won a gold medal in the Culinary Arts category at the American Family, Career and Community Leaders National Conference in Denver, Colorado.

YUHSD said Torres is beginning his journey towards a national championship in Denver while Madrid finishes competing.

“Experiencing the moment of actually playing at the Nationals made me realize that I didn’t come all the way here to be scared or nervous and that I am happy to take advantage of this opportunity. Being a freshman in Educator’s Rising and finishing first at the Nationals is insane to think about, because it shows that with the right attitude and dedication you can set high goals for yourself and achieve them,” Madrid said.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude and gratitude to all those who have played a role in my journey to winning the national championship with purpose and passion,” Torres said. “I would like to thank the wonderful people at Cibola, the CTE Program and the Arizona FCCLA for pushing me towards this amazing achievement. [Cibola Culinary Instructor] MS. [Tawny] Saldanha. Her dedication and belief in me not only pushed me beyond my limits, but also sparked my imagination with her new ideas. She gave me her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pursue what she previously thought was impossible. Students attended national conferences as competitors or leaders.

  • Health Occupational Student of America (HOSA)
  • Alaina Tracy (Cibola High School), 3rd Place, Home Care Assistant
  • Miguel Iniguez (Coffa High School), 3rd place, building maintenance
  • Jesús Torres (Cibola High School), Culinary Arts Category Winner
  • Lillian Madrid (Cofa High School), 1st in Lesson Planning and Delivery CTE.Vanessa Muela (San Luis High School), Book Spanish – 3rd in K-3

YUHSD also said several students have qualified as future Farmers of America citizens.

Cibola High School’s poultry assessment team consisted of Teigen Newby, Wyatt Bacon, Riley Rainey, and Kaylin Larson.

A conference operations team consisting of Annie Holbrook, Lucy Nielsen, Kari-Rose Logan, Rocco Myers, Emarina Quamen, Zachary Bowers and Ellie McNeice will also travel to Indianapolis in November.
