Flagstaff announces beautification project for artists | News

Flagstaff Beautification, art and science (bas) Program opens a Find an artist As of February 2025, the accepted artist will create original art pieces to cover two utility cabinets along route 66.

This call is part of an effort to glorify the Flagstaff community. BAS is affiliated Arizona Public Services (APS) Provides utility cabinets and local businesses FilmTeqwe offer decorative vinyl wrapping.

BAS Program Manager Jana Weldon is working on bringing art installations like this to Public Eye.

“These utility cabinets are canvas,” Weldon said. “For those who don’t tend to go to museums, it brings art where people are.”

The application will be sent via email and the deadline is February 25th. An artist may not submit more than two original designs for consideration.

Each application is submitted to Cory Woodall, administrator of collections, glorification and public art projects.

“Many public art tends to be part of a large infrastructure or sculpture,” Woodall says. “This is truly an opportunity for two-dimensional artists and there’s no need to have too many technical skills in the public art world. It’s really based on their artistic skills.”

It is recommended that each applicant perform box measurements before applying to obtain the appropriate scale of the art piece. Every aspect of the utility cabinet is decorated with printed vinyl wrap of selected art, including the top of the structure.

The winner will receive a $2,000 salary to fund a massive paper printing of the final design. The vinyl wrap is funded by BAS outside of this scholarship.

“The financial hurdles facing artists will prevent them from beautifully enchanting the space and preventing them from doing public projects,” Woodall said. “In all cases, the grant amount doesn’t cover the full amount of the project, but it certainly gives a good head start.”

Submissions will then be reviewed by the local panel committee. Woodall said that as long as the submission meets the full application criteria, it will be considered by the selection panel.

The selection panel uses a point-based voting system to score each application in categories such as overall aesthetic value and site-specific criteria.

Applicant points are summed after the panel meeting, with the highest point holders ensuring recommendations for consideration.

The panel members are made up of local creatives, workers and Flagstaff residents from members Beautification and Public Art Committee (BPAC).

All forms of art media are welcome to submit as long as they can be translated into large, high-resolution images.

BPAC makes final decisions in the selection process. All artists are informed of the panel standards before applying and know what to expect to design.

Virtual Pre-Application Meetings are scheduled February 13th For those interested in the program. Submissions can be sent cory.woodall@flagstafaz.gov. For more information, please see Public Arts and Beautification Opportunities Website.
