Flagstaff boys tennis sweeps Mesquite

The men’s tennis team, the Flagstaff Eagles, earned their first victory of the season on Thursday with a 9-0 win at home to Thorpe Park’s Mesquite.

The Eagles (1-1) easily won each of their singles matches in the Division II program meeting and lost only one doubles match.

Juniors Zachary Miller and Camden Hagerman won 8-0 for first place in doubles. Junior Rowan Hawkins and freshman August Fay are on the second court for the Eagles as he wins 8-0 and at home and away he will play three games.

Miller bageled his opponent in the second singles as well, losing no matches in both matches combined.

Flagstaff are scheduled to visit Mingus Union for their Section II match on March 23 at Cottonwood.

Spartan 8, Scorpion 1

The Northland Prep Academy won two straight games to kick off the season at Sedona Red Rocks on Thursday.

The D-III Spartans (2-0, 2-0 Section 6) dominated three doubles matches and dropped just one singles point. Sophomore Charlotte Shea won the sixth-place singles spot, 6-0, 6-0.

The NPA will visit Kingman on March 21st.

Eagles 8, Wildcats 1

Flagstaff won their second straight on Thursday, defeating Mesquite at Gilbert.

The Eagles (2-1) swept three doubles points with an 8-0 victory over junior Eva Fair and sophomore Caitlin Barr on the third court.

Barr also won the fourth singles spot, 6-1, 6-0. It was Flagstaff’s most dominant singles victory.

Flagstaff will be in Coconino for a rivalry match on March 21st.

Spartan 15, Scorpion 5

Northland Prep defeated Sedona Redrocks on Thursday for their first win of the season.

Jr. Lief Bylen led offensively in the road contest, going 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double, and 3 RBI for the 2A Conference Spartans. He also recorded six stolen bases. Senior Dylan Moneypenny allowed 2 walks, 3 runs, a triple, and 5 stolen bases to put him 1-for-2.

The Spartans needed just five innings to win via the Mercy rule against the 2A Scorpions, who started the season with a four-game losing skid. Freshman Braden Cosper and junior Jordan Donahue combined scoreless four innings and struck out eight batters.

The NPA (1-2) will be hosting the 2A Round Volleyball at Sinagua Middle School on March 21st.

Eagles 12, Titans 7

Flagstaff improved to 3-0 and started the season with a win over Phoenix’s Thunderbirds on Thursday.

The 4A Eagles lead 10-0 in the top of the fourth inning. The 4A Titans scored four runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Eagles added two more runs to control the lead and win.

Junior Luke Hughes went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs, walks and stolen bases for the Eagles, while senior teammate Luke Wilson went 3-for-5 with two runs.

Flagstaff will play in the Lancer Baseball Classic in Tucson starting Monday.

Wildcats 4, Panthers 3

Coconino’s winning streak in the season opener ended at four games on Thursday as he lost to Gilbert’s Mesquite in the 4A ball game.

The defending 4A State Tournament runners-up Wildcats came back from a 3-1 deficit with a 3-run run in the bottom of the 7th inning to take the win.

Coconino (4-1) recorded all three runs in the top of the third inning. Junior Hayden Mickelson went 2-for-4 at the plate with a two-run single in the third inning. Senior Conor Callahan scored a run, going 2-for-3.

men’s volleyball

Bulldog 3, Yeti 0

Basis Flagstaff scored the first men’s volleyball game in school history with a home loss to Barry Goldwater on Thursday.

The Yeti are Flagstaff’s only high school boys volleyball team and will play five more games on their own schedule this season. They will host McClintock on his March 25th.
