The snow balm is essentially a wall of frozen snow, creating a maze for drivers and pedestrians to navigate after last week’s storm.
The city of Flagstaff has racked up more than 5 feet of record-breaking snowfall this month, but it’s far from over as freezing temperatures continue and another storm is expected early next week.
Heavy snowfall last week prompted Flagstaff residents to stay off the road. Police reported 31 car crashes and another 14 of his vehicles stranded. School was canceled for 4 days last week. The highway was closed up to the Grand Canyon. The national monument closes early.
Then everything started to melt. The roof of a local grocery store partially collapsed, forcing people to evacuate Wednesday afternoon. Small streets are smooth with frozen runoff. Armand Shawman worked his way through a chest-high icy embankment of snow pushed out of the street by a municipal plow.
“It’s slippery and cold,” he said.
County and city officials are still working to catch up.
Carlos Gudino tilling the public school grounds.
“When winter comes, it’s 50/50. You never know what’s going to happen. Either there’s little snow, or it’s snowing. And it’s hitting us hard,” he said.
Flagstaff is just three inches away from recording the second wettest January ever recorded in 1980. More snow is expected for his last two days of the month.
For those tracking, the best distinction is 104.8 inches, a feat accomplished in 1949.
