Flagstaff man sentenced to prison for arson in Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – A U.S. district judge has sentenced a Flagstaff man to nearly two years in prison for setting the Grand Canyon arson, according to federal prosecutors in Arizona. It was announced on Tuesday.

Dantay Dunbar, 21, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $20,146.13 in restitution.

This punishment stems from incidents that occurred on the night of May 17th and the morning of May 18th. Dunbar allegedly broke into a locked cabin in Grand Canyon National Park that belonged to his ex-girlfriend. His ex-girlfriend was not home at the time.

While inside, he poured a bottle of clear liquor onto the bed, set his ex-girlfriend's shirt on fire and placed it on the bed. Dunbar left the cabin when his bed began to burn.

The fire and smoke caused damage to the walls and ceiling of the cabin. Bystanders extinguished most of the fire before rescue workers arrived.

A National Park Service law enforcement ranger found Dunbar and arrested him on unrelated charges, authorities said. He confessed to arson.

On July 8, Dunbar pleaded guilty to arson of a dwelling.
