Flagstaff prepares for first accumulated snowfall of the season

It started snowing around 6pm on Tuesday.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — After the end of the dry season in Arizona’s highlands, Flagstaff locals and visitors are excited to see the first snowfall of the season.

“This is ideal and perfect,” said Brandon Martin of Yuma. “We like it really cold when we come here. So it’s been a great time, a great week.”

Flagstaff’s cold weather is drawing tourists from all over the state, but some who took day trips Tuesday were a little disappointed.

“A combination of cold and snow would be even better,” said Hari Goldstein of Tempe.

The visitor just missed it. It started snowing around 6pm on Tuesday.

“We need snow. It’s definitely dry here,” said Quentin Estick of Phoenix.

Local residents also told 12News they want snow. They are gearing up for their first accumulation of the season.

“We’ve had a few storms here and there, but this is the first time we’ve seen a significant amount of precipitation,” said Coconino County Acting Emergency Management Director Tim Carter.

Carter said the county’s snow plows are ready. As soon as the flakes start falling, they scatter onto the roads and continue until the storm passes and the roads are cleared.

Mr Carter warned motorists to continue to use caution on the roads and watch out for black ice and slippery spots.

“Please take your time. Leave plenty of space with the car in front of you. Wear good clothing, the wind chill will be quite low.” [Tuesday night,]” Carter said.

On highways, the Arizona Department of Transportation also deployed snow plows ahead of the storm.

“When a storm hits, our snow removal operations are working around the clock,” ADOT spokeswoman Kelsey Moe said.

ADOT said snow removal operators have been preparing since October.

Weather permitting, roads will be coated with de-icer.

“It’s really important to remember to give people space to work, because it’s there to clear ice and snow from the roads and make commuting safer and easier,” Mo said. Ta.

ADOT does not recommend traveling during the storm, but recommends that drivers check AZ511 for road closure information if they need to be on the road.

Drivers are also advised to travel with warm clothing, food and water in case of an emergency.
