of City of Flagstaff recently learned that the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at 1800 E Butler Ave has closed.
The MRF is operated by Norton Environmental, Inc. under contract to the City and processes the City’s recyclable resources. Due to the abrupt nature of this closure, the City does not currently have immediate alternatives in place to manage recyclables collected by the City and will be closed to homes on Thursday, April 27th and Friday, April 28th. We have decided to suspend collection of recycling carts for asked. Residents who normally have a recycling collection service on Thursdays and Fridays are asked not to leave their recycling carts on the curb as they will not be collected. Commercial recycling services operate on a regular schedule.
Due to the abrupt nature of the MRF closure, all recyclables collected since Tuesday have been taken to the Cinder Lake Landfill for disposal. was evaluated and used up, but unfortunately there was no choice but to landfill these materials.
As such, public recycling drop-offs at MRF are currently not available. Alternate public recycling drop-off locations can be viewed on Google Maps here. However, the city encourages the public to hold on to recyclables until further notice.
The City is working diligently with all local partners to identify solutions to restart recycling services as soon as possible. An update will be sent out prior to the week of May 1 to inform residents of next steps related to recycling their homes and the status of MRF.
A fire was also reported at MRF on the morning of Tuesday 25 April. No injuries have been reported and the extent of damage caused by the fire is unknown at this time. It’s also unclear if the fire and the closure of his MRF are related.
