Flagstaff residents gather to watch the pinecone drop to ring in the new year

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) – Every year, thousands of people flock to downtown Flagstaff to watch the pine cones fall.

This is not only a Flagstaff tradition, but one of the top 10 ball drops in the United States.

The historic Weatherford Hotel has been dropping pine cones on New Year’s Eve since 1999.

One pine cone is 6 feet tall and weighs 70 pounds.

Ryan Randazzo of Discover Flagstaff says the event is drawing attention from across the country.

“Being recognized nationally as one of the top 10 by USA Today is very special for this city… It really shows that people across the state and across the country are paying attention to this event.” “We are working hard,” Randazzo said.

Pine cones fall at noon, 10pm, and midnight to represent the new year in different time zones.

Between 10 and 15,000 people will flock to downtown during the three drops, Randazzo said. It’s a big help for local businesses.

“Visit over 200 restaurants, bars, and craft breweries…Winter can be a little slow in Flagstaff, but it’s nice to get some attention during the slow winter months. ,” Randazzo said.

Flagstaff residents Dylan Brown and his son Robbie say it’s become a family tradition. They were descending at noon.

“Excited to get out and celebrate the new year…see the excitement during the day before going to bed early,” Brown said.

Michael Barnett and his family came from Tucson to celebrate.

“The community has been very welcoming. We have friends in the area…we gather here. It’s the camaraderie, the community and the great weather,” Barnett said.

As the midday pine cones fell, families hugged, couples kissed, and people celebrated for 2025.
