Flagstaff school bus gets stuck in sinkhole as recent storms put immense pressure on area infrustructure

No one was injured when the school bus broke in Flagstaff I got stuck in a sinkhole on Friday morning.

The Flagstaff Unified School District said the incident occurred during a bus trip on March 23. Slayton Ranch Road Near the Donnie Park area.

No students were on the bus. The driver was not injured.

Coconino County officials said, “This morning, streams of water endangered a culvert at the Rio de Flag intersection on Slayton Ranch Road.” has collapsed.”

Slayton Ranch Road will be closed until the crew can repair it.

Residents north of the Wash can use Neptune Road to access Silver Saddle Road. From the south, use Townsend to reach Winona Road.

Recent storms have put huge stress on infrastructure, officials say

Officials in Coconino County, where the aforementioned incident occurred, said recent rains and thaws have put a lot of pressure on roads and pipes.

“These flood streams are just beyond the capacity of our infrastructure,” said Coconino County Public Works Commissioner Christopher Tressler. “We’re seeing more runoff in at least 25 years.”

According to Tressler, crews monitor the roads around the clock. Some roads are already closed.

Meanwhile, the storm is eroding the streets and so is Coconino County’s budget.

They face about $1 million in damages, with an estimated $800,000 for just one project, according to county leaders. If that prediction is correct, officials say the price tag for the repair will be well above budget. Officials say they are in contact with states as they consider offsetting repair costs, including potential ADOT subsidies.

A state of emergency has not yet been declared, but discussions are ongoing as to whether it is possible as a next step.
