The Flagstaff Girls’ Soccer Senior Class is just a few players away from being able to single-handedly form a college starting at age 11.

On Tuesday, Eagles senior footballer Lexi Porter signed a contract to play at Yavapai College in Prescott next fall.

She is also another Eagles senior to sign a deal in 2023.

“I was thinking about it on my way here,” she said. It’s crazy to have so many signatures this year.”

She expressed her commitment to the Roughriders in a ceremony at Flagstaff High School in front of her family, teammates and soccer career coaches.

“Thanks to all of you for getting me this far. All the building blocks I needed are here. And it’s crazy to see each one sitting in front of me.” So it’s special, not just for me, but for my team,” Porter said.

The forward and midfielder joins Roughriders, who have just completed their second full season as a JUCO program. Yavapai went 8-8 this season, including his six-game win streak midway through the 2022-23 season.

Yavapai also has porter family ties. Porter’s mother attended school and his grandmother worked there for many years.

These factors made the Roughrider an easy choice.

“I grew up running around those hallways. The team itself is full of kindness and just keeps getting better and better. Now you can be part of it.

Porter immediately offers the skill to Yavapai. But perhaps more importantly, she was one of the most passionate players on Flagstaff’s roster this year, according to her coaching staff.

Eagles assistant coach Chris Birkin said, “She’s never mad at her teammates, but she’s always so fired up on the field.” I just want to do something as bad as I can see.”

Manager Savannah Berry added: “Lexi wears emotion on her sleeve, even on the football field.”

Berry has been impressed with Porter long before he joined the Eagles varsity team. She remembers Porter and his twin sister Brooke when they were little.

“Before high school, when you were younger, you used to come to my house and your mom’s games to play outside and jump and have fun and play with the adults,” Berry said. told Porter during the ceremony on Tuesday. “And now it’s amazing to see you grow up and see it in a different light, not just as a friend’s daughter, but as someone I can mentor.”

Brooke was the driving force behind Lexi Porter’s decision to play college football. But while Lexie also dabbled in track and field, she wasn’t sure college football was in her cards.

Then, after a successful club season and reaching the 4A conference semifinals in the postseason with the Eagles this winter, she began to build confidence.

On April 5, Brook signed a contract to play at New York’s Elmira College. Watching his sister make decisions gave Lexi the motivation she needed for her journey.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, she’s going across the country for soccer. She’s a crazy defender and I need to move on,'” Lexie said.

After finishing his high school career, Porter said he would do as much pick-up football and training as possible to prepare for the next level. She plans to move to Prescott in August for preseason training.
