Flagstaff hit record highs on Saturday and Sunday, but Sunday was one degree below the city’s high, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Temperatures peaked at 96 degrees Celsius on Sunday afternoon, a fitting finale to a week of sweltering heat. This followed a high of 95C on Saturday, both of which surpassed the previous record of 92C on their respective days.
Flagstaff’s all-time high was recorded on July 5, 1973 at 97 degrees Celsius. The city has hit 96 degrees on several occasions so far, including in the summers of 2021, 2013, 2007, 1989 and 1970.
But there may be grace ahead. According to the NWS Belmont office’s forecast, flagstaff could see rain all week, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms each day, at least through next Sunday. Still, barring a storm, temperatures could reach a high of 94 degrees Celsius on Monday, hovering around 90 degrees Celsius for most of the week, and rain could bring gusts and thunder.
