“There was a man holding his head and a man bleeding from his leg,” said Ada Martin, an eyewitness. She was in her car outside her apartment when her bus crashed in front of her. “This car, more or less three cars behind, didn’t appear to be trying to stop. I don’t know exactly what happened, but the bus hit the rear of the other bus directly and that was it.”
The Chopper 3 video showed people lying on the lawn in front of the Roosevelt Apartments, which had already been evacuated due to an unrelated fire alarm.
Robert West Jr., a passenger on Bus 14, said, “I yelled ‘Hey, hey, hey,’ like someone missed the stop or something.” He was hit by a bus on his way to a haircut appointment.
West Jr. said he helped another man escape from the chaotic bus. I heard a “whoosh” and I told him to “hurry up” because I was worried “something might explode”.
The cause of the bus collision is unknown. An investigation is ongoing, according to Philadelphia Police and SEPTA.
