The National Weather Service issued a flood warning Sunday afternoon for Maricopa and Gila counties, which was extended to Saturday and next Sunday.
A flood warning issued for Maricopa County was originally scheduled to last through Thursday, but has been extended until 2 p.m. Saturday.
This warning is due to the continued upstream release from the Granite Reef Dam. Flooding will affect unbridged intersections such as MacEllips Road across the Salt River upstream of Tempe Town Lake, the Weather Service said.
A flood warning issued for Gila County was originally scheduled to last until Monday, but was extended until noon on Sunday, March 19.
The warning is due to continued rain and thaw. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, flooding will affect Tonto He Creek through the Tonto Basin, making crosswalks without bridges unsafe to cross. These include A crossings, bar X crossings, greenback crossings, and store crossings.
The Bureau of Meteorology said most flood deaths occurred in vehicles and advised people to turn back if they tried to cross flooded roads.
These warnings may extend beyond their current expiration date.
