Florence chef takes home win at 9th annual Alabama Seafood Cook-Off

A chef from popular Florence restaurant Odette has been named the winner of the ninth annual Alabama Seafood Cook-Off, pitting the best chefs across the state against each other to win $2,500 and a chance to win at the 2024 Great American Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans, Louisiana this summer.

According to Alabama Gulf Seafood, chef Tyler Ogden's creation “Spring Tide” immediately won over those lucky enough to try it, including the judges. The dish consisted of a pompano fillet and crab and shrimp mousse.

Before competing, Ogden spoke about what she hoped to gain from the cooking competition.

“My goals at ASCO are honestly just to have fun and hopefully bring home a third trophy for Odette. I'm looking forward to seeing new techniques from my competitors and really showing what I can do in the limited time I have.”

Ogden will be traveling to New Orleans with sous chef Taylor Bradley.

Since ASCO began, competition dishes have been judged on the following criteria:

  • Presentation, overall impression, delivery method
  • Creativity and practicality
  • Combination and balance of ingredients
  • Proper preparation and craftsmanship
  • Flavor, taste, texture

The five categories are the same criteria used in the National Great American Seafood Cook-Off, with each category worth a maximum of 20 points for a total of 100 points.

Last year, Chef Brody Olive of Voyagers at Perdido Beach Resort won the Alabama state cook-off, and he eventually went on to win the national competition.
