Ford recalls a half million pickup trucks due to safety issue

Reuters reported Tuesday morning that Ford Motors will recall more than 600,000 F-150 trucks due to serious safety concerns.

The company has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a loss of signal can cause the transmission to downshift regardless of the vehicle's speed. reportThe recall covers 2014 F-150 models, and downshifting into first gear could cause the rear wheels to lock up or cause the driver to lose control.

Reuters reported that Ford dealers will offer updates to the vehicles' “powertrain control module software” following the recall.

Ford cited 96 field reports, 124 customer complaints, 300 warranty reports and two injury claims for 482 2014 F-150s. Each complaint was about unexpected transmission downshifts, according to Reuters.

Ford has recalled other F-150 models in the past for similar issues: In 2016, 153,000 2011-2012 F-150s were recalled for a similar problem, according to Reuters. That recall led to an NHTSA investigation in 2017, and Ford expanded the recall in 2019 to about 1.5 million trucks, including many 2013 F-150s.

A new recall was issued in late 2019 involving an additional 107,000 2013 F-150s, according to the outlet.

Ford and NHTSA have been in discussions since March about this ongoing issue and agreed to issue this new recall. Nevertheless, Ford maintains that the complaint rate for the 2014 model year is lower than the three previously recalled models.
